VPI – Volcanic Pozzolan Iceland

Natural pozzolana from Iceland for sustainable concrete production

VPI is a natural pozzolana manufactured in Degerhamn for use as a Type II  addition in concrete in accordance with SS-EN 206 and SS 137003:2021+T2:2025. VPI is a type-approved product that meets the requirements of SS 137004:2024.

The use of VPI in combination with cement

According to SS 137003:2021+T2:2025, the efficiency factor k for calculating equivalent w/c ratio shall be no more than 0.5 for pozzolana when used with CEM I or CEM II/A, CEM II/B or CEM IV/A.

Furthermore, it is specified that an increased k-value may be applied when adding a specific pozzolana to a specific cement. An increased k-value may be determined  by testing. To date, no such testing has been carried out for binders containing VPI. However, such testing is planned for 2026.

Advantages of VPI

  • Natural and stable raw material
  • Contributes to the strength of concrete
  • Reduces climate impact through cement substitution

Why choose VPI?

  • Reduce climate impact – By replacing some of the traditional cement with VPI, you can lower CO₂ emissions in your concrete production.
  • High and consistent quality – VPI is extracted from two quarries of comparable quality, Lambafell and Litla Sandfell, and undergoes thorough quality control and processing.
  • Natural and sustainable – A geologically stable material that contributes to long-term sustainability in construction projects.

Quarrying and production

VPI is extracted from two quarries in Iceland with consistent and high quality: Lambafell and Litla Sandfell. After  extraction, the material is screened to ensure a homogeneous product, after which it is transported by  vessels to Sweden for further processing.

Processing

In Sweden, VPI undergoes two stages: drying and grinding. The finished product has pozzolanic properties and can be used in  used together with ordinary  cement. This contributes to strength development and enables climate improvement by partially replacing traditional cement with VPI.
